Helps keep mice, birds, squirrels, chipmunks, and pack rats from eating bait out of Dog Proof traps. Your trap still has food in it when the Raccoon comes by.
Helps keep bait dry from rain and snow, so that bait is fresh and scent still working. Not 100% airtight so scent can still get out.
Helps with the eye appeal at night, keying off the raccoon’s eyesight of detecting shiny objects. Helps on those nights that the wind is in the wrong direction the raccoon is traveling or moons are not up all night and/or overcast skies at night.

You can do this in any order.
Take 1 cotton ball and with small screw driver shove into base aka as scent holder.
The bolt will grab cotton and keep in place.
You can now add lure/scent, fish oill, salmon oil, or crayfish oil to cotton balls before you deploy in dog proof.
Whatever it takes to produce more tight chains.

One of my worries that with the earliest version of the Egg for Dog Proofs especially, while testing with traps unset. But even testing never had egg more than 10 feet away.
I thought a tether was needed because I was afraid raccoon or fox would carry them off.
That has not been the case with every version I have done for the past 3 years. So, I removed them off all of mine.
But few reports of raccoons burying the Chernobyl Raccoon Egg after they are trapped, the chain and cable burying the Chernobyl Raccoon Egg as it makes trap circle. Then a few reports of Chernobyl Raccoon Eggs missing out of the hundreds sold, but no photos to find out what animal is causing this or how far the egg was taken.
So here are the two Tether Options because I want your Chernobyl Raccoon Eggs to last.
No. 1 rule – Loop on any Tether that the dog proof stake goes thru, must me large enough for the egg to fall away once the raccoon is trapped.
Tether Option 1 - Most expensive option is a 1/16th cable cut around 12 to 13 inches with two Ferrules. One at each end to make loop.
Loop at egg end is just big enough to fit bolt. Loop at DP large enough for stake to go thru and fall away once raccoon is trapped.
Take egg apart and put cable between egg and washer and put back together.
Tether Option 2 – Least expensive option is nylon string around 24 inches long. Loop at DP large enough for stake to go thru and fall away once raccoon is trapped.
Your option but you don’t have to take egg apart and just tie around base of egg at washer and cut off excess.

P.S. Remember trapping near water Chernobyl Raccoon Eggs do not float.

The Kentucky Tether – Kentucky Trapper

18-inch stainless steel fishing leader with swivel on one end that is stainless steel riveted to the washer.
The other end is a snap hook that I can attach to the eye screw installed in a nearby tree or log.
If not setting near a tree or something the snap hook can be attached to the trap chain or its own stake.
I do this so I don’t lose the eggs down the bank and into the creek or by a critter.
WATER TETHER
CAUTION - Chernobyl Raccoon Eggs – DO NOT FLOAT – So when using near creek or water keep that in mind you might have to go for a dip to retrieve it.
I do not know what they will do in fast running creek when it floods – Can only assume that it has enough flat surfaces that it will tumble down stream on the bottom.
Water Tether - DIY
For you that are concerned about losing you Chernobyl Raccoon Eggs that trap near Water.
You will need 12 inch or longer Fishing Wire Leaders with Duo Lock Snap.
Remove the Duo Lock Snap.
Put swivel thru small steel loop and make a larger loop and reinstall Duo Lock Snap to opposite side you took off which is the swivel end.
Loosen nut in base of Chernobyl Raccoon Egg slip loop over egg and pull tight. Retighten Nut.
You can attach Duo Lock Snap to Dog Proof chain or anchor cable.
