How did you deer season go? Do you want to get more out of your land? Do you practice land management for your wildlife? Wanting to know more about whitetail deer management?
Well here is what you missed at the QUALITY DEER MANAGEMENT ASSOCIATION NATIONAL CONVENTION in New Orleans, Louisiana on July 20th thru 23rd.
Best thing about the seminars these are professional land managers, and the who, who’s of the top deer biologist in the country.
There were some great seminars this year – Habitat, Deer and GROUND BREAKING HOG RESEARCH.
Just few of the seminars I listened in on.
Poor Soils mean poor nutrition for deer, right? Wrong! - Dr. Craig Harper, University of Tennessee who I consider the top person in the country on food for whitetails.
Great seminar dealing with limiting factors.
Under pressure: exploring deer behaviors in response to hunting activity. Dr. Gino J. D’Angelo is an assistant professor of deer ecology and management in the Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources at University of Georgia.
Great research on how whitetail want to and will return to home range and use it to their benefit and safety.
Nature or Nurture? - A comparison of nutrition versus genetics on long-term impacts to body and antler size of white-tailed deer populations. Dr. Bronson Strickland is the Extension Wildlife Specialist at Mississippi State University, co-director of the MSU Deer Lab, a certified wildlife biologist and a QDMA member
Something I have long believed that the genetics are their they just need to be turned on.
Be A QDM Architect: How to design the perfect hunting property from the foundation up Matt Dye of Virginia owns and operates Land & Legacy LLC and Adam Keith of Missouri is the co-founder of Land & Legacy LLC.
Things I have long told my clients, if you can’t access your property what’s the point.
Combining benefits of food plots and early succession management for deer Dr. Craig Harper, University of Tennessee who I consider the top person in the country on food for whitetails.
Talking about succession vs regeneration and knowing the difference.
This section is for the MISSOURI DEPARTMENT OF CONSERVATION and LAND OWNERS with hog problems – If you don’t get involved in his research you are FOOLS!! This is ground breaking and a real game changer to eliminate not control wild hogs.
Battling Feral Swine - Where we have been and Where We are headed
Dr. Glen Gentry of Louisiana is an associate professor of animal reproduction at the LSU AgCenter. He is currently the coordinator of Bob R. Jones Idlewild Research Station and a member of the scientific advisory board for the Bob R. Jones Wildlife Research Institute. His research program focuses on improving assisted reproductive technologies in relevant domestic and exotic species, evaluating environmental impacts of livestock operations and the development of a toxic bait and delivery system for feral swine.
One main thing they have learned in this research is that Feral Pigs prefer Dehydrated Carp over Whole Shell Corn so it is very possible that the Asian carp are a voracious and destructive invasive species threatening the survival of native fishes and the health of America's waterways can be used to eliminate the wild hogs another destructive invasive species that threatening the survival of native wildlife and health of its habitat.
If you want to see the Majority of this Seminar go to North American Wildlife and Habitat facebook video down below Battling Feral Pigs and click on video. Share this video with Missouri Department of Conservation get them involved in this to stop the feral pig in Missouri NOW!
Is Facebook Killing Deer Hunting? Will Brantley of Kentucky is the hunting editor of Field & Stream magazine.
Even more seminars could have been attended.
I have been a member of the Quality Deer Management Association for the past 15 years. Seminars have had a direct influence on my property, from the design, management and planting for the past 10 years. They also have a direct influence on my customer and clients when showing them hunting properties. These are the QDMA conventions I have attended in the past and I have learned information that sometimes is in research state and does not come out to the public for years.
